Knight
and Day
REVIEWER
– MARTHA-ANN MILLER
Tom
Cruise is back in a film that showcases his talent as the charmingly,
eccentric leading man. Ably assisted by Cameron Diaz, Knight
and Day is
an action-packed – if somewhat violent – romp as June Havens
(Diaz) finds herself involved with Roy Miller (Cruise), a secret
agent on the edge of sanity. He has discovered that he isn’t
supposed to survive his latest mission, and while trying to get
information out that could save his life, he encounters June. When
he realises that his actions have put her in danger, he brings her
along. As they outsmart and outgun other agents, weapons dealers and
the police, it soon becomes apparent that the only people they can
count on is each other. Who can be trusted? Is Miller really as
nuts as he appears? Will they make it through alive? By the end,
all questions are answered – some in an unexpected way.
Knight
and Day
is action -acked from beginning to end and it is fun – in fact,
there is so much humour that the viewer can be forgiven for ignoring
all the death and mayhem that seems to follow Miller as he blasts his
way through each situation. June soon discovers a talent for guns as
well and she goes from what appears to be a bit of an airhead to
someone who can plan – and execute – a mission to save both
herself and Miller.
The
chemistry between Cruise and Diaz sizzles as the guns rage and the
plot thickens. The supporting cast – in particular Peter Sarsgaard
– give solid performances that let both Cruise and Diaz shine.
Watch out for an early scene in a plane which cuts between Cruise as
his character ‘deals’ with a situation that could lead to his
death and Diaz as her character convinces herself that she should go
for it with this wacky guy she’s just met – this sets up the tone
and the action for the rest of the film.
Of
course, there are a few totally predictable moments – these days
it’s hard to give something new to any action film – but they are
forgiven because the viewer is having a great time following the two
extremely likable leads as they try to outsmart their enemies. So
get the popcorn, a choc-top or two and strap on a safety harness for
a great ride with Knight
and Day.
